Students of the Polytechnic,
Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday protested against the death of one of their
colleagues, Mr. Rapheal Akintaro, of the Electrical and Electronic Department,
accusing the institution of not doing enough to enhance the health facility on
the campus.
The students blocked all major
roads leading to the campus, thereby causing a heavy gridlock along the
Sango-Poly Road. The students, who displayed several placards that expressed
their displeasure with the authorities, called on the state government to
declare a ‘state of emergency’ in the school. They said the nurses at the
Health Centre demanded the student’s identification instead of administering
the first aid.
Raphael was said to have fallen
ill after sitting for an examination on Monday. According the Public
Relations Officer of the school, Soladoye Adewole, Raphael was taken to the
school clinic but died while being transferred to the Oyo State Hospital,
Adeoyo, Ibadan.
