Flood Destroys Market, Court In Ibadan

The heavy down pour which occurred between Tuesday and yesterday Wednesday caused lots of destruction in some parts of Ibadan. Most affected is the Omi-Adio area of town where the Omi market was destroyed with goods costing millions of naira been washed off along with shops and vehicles.

Part of the buildings that suffered damage is the Omi-Adio Magistrate court where several case files have been reportedly destroyed.

Residents Of Oluyole Call On Government To Rechannel Drains

Residents of the Oluyole part of Ibadan have called on the Oyo state government to rechannel drainages coming into their area for fear that flood may destroy their properties and put ther lives at risk.

The recidents made this know during a protest where they carried placards with inscriptions of their griviances on it. They stated clearly that they are not against the road construction going on in the area but that flood should not be allowed to destroy their community as a result of the construction.

It should be noted that one of the private residence of the governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi is located in an area of Oluyole.

The Rains Are Here, Stop Dumping Refuse On Roads & Drainages, NIMET Warns Oyo Residents

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has warned Oyo residents not to dump refuse on roads or around drainages as the usual continuous rains will begin any moment from now. The body warned that failure to comply by this will lead to blockages of drainages which might lead to flood.

They were also advised to be actively involved in the environmental sanitation days which occur every Thursday and last Saturdays of every month. 

Ibadan Residents Raise Alarm Over Imminent Flooding

Residents of Oluyole Estate Extension, Zone 5 and 6 in Ibadan, have called on the Oyo State Government to help the communities divert some constructed drains to avoid flooding.

The residents, who made the plea during a protest in the area on Saturday, urged the government to act immediately on the diversion of the drains to prevent any disaster. It was reported that the residents had earlier drawn the attention of the government on matter through a letter dated July 28 .

Spokesman of Zone 6 residents, Mr Emmanuel Omoniyi, urged the government to urgently assist the people by instructing the contractor to divert some water channels in the area. He said that if not diverted, the drains could cause flooding that would destroy more than 147 houses.

Another aggrieved person, Mr. Olalekan said that they embarked on a peaceful demonstration because their letter to the government and other concerned authorities, had not produced any positive response till date.

Lets hope the government of Oyo state will do something about this as soon as possible.
